Why I Built CryptoTaxSentry

In 2026, while researching crypto tax tools, I kept running into the same problem: tools that charged $99–$299 per year, tools that required connecting exchange API keys, and tools that asked you to upload your full transaction history to a cloud server — just to get a rough estimate of what you might owe.

That felt disproportionate. Estimating a capital gain is straightforward arithmetic: sale price minus purchase price, multiplied by your tax rate. None of that math requires your private wallet data on someone else's server.

I built CryptoTaxSentry to prove the point: a fully private, browser-based crypto tax estimator is possible — and it can be free. Every calculation runs in your browser using JavaScript. Your numbers never leave your device. Close the tab and they're gone.

You can verify this

Open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the calculator. You'll see zero outbound data requests containing your financial inputs. This isn't just a privacy policy claim — it's a technical reality you can confirm yourself.

My Background

I am a web and WordPress developer with over four years of professional experience. I have built and delivered projects for clients in Pakistan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other international markets — ranging from custom WordPress sites and Elementor builds to performance-optimised tools and client-side JavaScript applications.

CryptoTaxSentry is built on that same technical foundation: a client-side JavaScript calculation engine embedded in a WordPress environment, designed to be fast, private, and accessible on any device without requiring an account.

Important disclosure

I am a web developer — not a Certified Public Accountant, enrolled agent, tax attorney, or UK accountant. Every guide on this site is researched from primary government sources and written in plain language, but it does not constitute professional tax advice. Always verify with a qualified tax professional before filing.

How I Research Every Guide

My research process for every article published on CryptoTaxSentry follows a consistent five-step approach — the same process, every time, regardless of how straightforward the topic appears:

  1. Start with the primary government source. For US content: the relevant IRS notice, revenue procedure, revenue ruling, or FAQ page on IRS.gov. For UK content: the relevant GOV.UK guidance page or the HMRC Cryptoassets Manual (CRYPTO10000–CRYPTO40000). I read the actual document — not a summary of it.
  2. Cross-reference with authoritative secondary sources. I verify rate figures and interpretations against the Tax Foundation, major accounting firm publications, and professional CPA resources — to identify whether the primary source is unambiguous or whether professionals disagree on its application.
  3. Flag genuinely unsettled areas honestly. Where the IRS or HMRC has not published clear guidance — liquid staking, certain DeFi transactions, NFT classifications — I say so explicitly. I present the conservative position, any alternative interpretation, and current professional consensus. I do not guess and present it as fact.
  4. Cite specific sources, not homepages. Every factual claim links to the specific IRS notice, HMRC manual page, or GOV.UK guidance — not just "according to the IRS." Readers can verify every claim by following the linked source directly.
  5. Update when rules change. Tax law changes frequently. I review all guides at the start of each tax year and update immediately when primary sources change. Each guide carries a published date and a last-reviewed date so you can judge how current the information is.

What CryptoTaxSentry Is — and Is Not

What it is

An educational estimation tool. It helps you understand roughly what your crypto tax liability might look like before you sell, swap, or unstake — so you can make more informed decisions about timing, position sizing, and what questions to bring to a tax professional.

What it is not

A tax filing tool. CryptoTaxSentry does not produce audit-ready figures, does not generate tax forms, and does not account for your full financial picture — total income, all deductions, state or local taxes, and every transaction in your portfolio all affect your real liability in ways a scenario calculator cannot fully model.

Plain advice

Use this site for planning. Use a qualified CPA, enrolled agent, or UK accountant for filing. The cost of professional advice is almost always lower than the cost of a filing mistake.
